OpenAI has seen a significant uptick in users for its ChatGPT service thanks to the recent upgrade of its image generator, which can produce images inspired by Studio Ghibli and other creative styles. The same multimodal model that powers this image generator is now set to be integrated into various applications through OpenAI’s API, identified as “gpt-image-1,” according to a recent blog post. Several notable companies have already expressed interest in utilizing this technology.

OpenAI highlighted the model’s capabilities, emphasizing its ability to produce images in various artistic styles while adhering to user-defined guidelines, leveraging extensive knowledge, and effectively rendering text. This versatility opens the door to numerous practical applications across different fields.

Prominent companies such as Adobe and Figma have already begun the process of incorporating the model into their platforms. Details on their usage were provided in the blog post:

Adobe’s suite of creative tools, including Firefly and Express, will now feature OpenAI’s image generation technology. This integration offers users various aesthetic options and flexibility, which are essential for business professionals, consumers, and creators looking to foster new creative concepts.

Figma is employing this advanced model to enhance its platform with sophisticated image generation and editing features. Beginning today, users of Figma Design can harness ‘gpt-image-1’ to generate and modify images based on simple prompts, enabling them to customize styles, add or remove elements, expand backgrounds, and more. This new functionality allows designers to explore and iterate on ideas visually, all within Figma.

OpenAI has indicated its commitment to collaborating with developers and businesses to identify new use cases for image generation within the API, with company partnerships including Canva, GoDaddy, and Instacart.

The “gpt-image-1” model will first be available through OpenAI’s Images API, with plans to support the Responses API shortly thereafter.
