OpenAI is expected to unveil its next artificial intelligence model, GPT-5, in August, according to recent reports. The new model will feature three variants: a base model, along with nano and mini versions. While details about this flagship model remain scarce, it is anticipated that GPT-5 will bring an end to the o-series models. OpenAI aims to merge the GPT-series and o-series into a singular model that boasts enhanced native reasoning capabilities.

GPT-5 Will Feature Native Reasoning Capabilities

Speculation surrounding the GPT-5 model has circulated since last year, initially associated with the codename Orion. However, this reference was later clarified to pertain to GPT-4.5, which was launched in February.

In February, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, outlined the development roadmap for GPT-5 in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He indicated that GPT-4.5 would be the last model to operate without chain-of-thought (CoT) capabilities, signaling that future models would inherently understand when to engage in in-depth reasoning.

Altman also noted that users on the free tier of ChatGPT could expect unlimited access to GPT-5 at a standard intelligence level, while Plus and Pro subscribers would benefit from a more advanced intelligence setting. He emphasized that the new model would support various OpenAI tools, including voice, Canvas, Search, and Deep Research.

Since that announcement, updates on the release timeline for GPT-5 have been limited. Recently, Alexander Wei, a member of OpenAI’s Technical Staff, indicated in a post on X that the launch of GPT-5 is imminent. Reports from Technology News suggest that the model could be released as early as next month.

Sources with knowledge of the company’s intentions have revealed that GPT-5 will debut following the launch of OpenAI’s anticipated open-source models. Furthermore, alongside the base and mini variants, the nano model will be available exclusively through the API, while the base and mini versions will be accessible via both ChatGPT and API, according to the publication.
