OpenAI is reportedly in the development stages of a new social media platform. According to recent sources, the San Francisco-based artificial intelligence firm intends to integrate innovative AI features into the upcoming app, although specific details regarding this integration remain unclear. The platform aims to compete with existing social media giants, such as Elon Musk’s X, previously known as Twitter, and Meta’s suite of social apps. Notably, both X and Meta have recently introduced their own AI functionalities to enhance user experience. This news comes shortly after OpenAI unveiled its GPT-4.1 family of AI models.

OpenAI’s Proposed Social Platform May Leverage ChatGPT

Technology News has reported that OpenAI plans to create a “X-like social network,” citing several unnamed insiders familiar with the project. According to reports, an internal prototype of this platform has already been developed, with a focus on utilizing ChatGPT’s GPT-4o for image generation. This social component is expected to feature a public feed where users can share and display their generated images.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has reportedly sought external feedback regarding the prototype. However, it remains unconfirmed whether the social aspect will function as a standalone application or as part of an enhanced ChatGPT experience. It is also noteworthy that OpenAI’s video generation tool, Sora, includes a similar feed, yet it lacks a social dimension as it does not showcase creators’ identities on the feed page.

From the information available, it seems that OpenAI envisions its social app as a platform infused with social experiences rather than a traditional social network augmented by AI features, similar to offerings from X, Facebook, Instagram, and others.

The venture into the social media landscape will likely revive tensions between OpenAI and its rivals, X and Meta. Musk has been a vocal critic of Altman and the company’s profit-oriented model. The billionaire has previously engaged in legal disputes with OpenAI and even attempted to acquire the firm. In response to the acquisition attempt, Altman famously declined the offer by stating “no thank you” in a post, humorously mentioning the possibility of buying Twitter for $9.74 billion instead.

In February, there were indications that Meta was gearing up to launch a standalone Meta AI app to take on ChatGPT. In reaction to these developments, Altman remarked, “ok fine maybe we’ll do a social app.”
