OpenAI has announced a collaboration with South Korean tech giants Samsung and SK Hynix, marking a significant step towards acquiring the advanced semiconductor technology crucial for its Stargate initiative.
The two Korean companies have committed to ramping up their production capabilities to fulfill OpenAI’s increasing need for memory chips that drive its computationally intensive artificial intelligence models. OpenAI anticipates a requirement of approximately 900,000 semiconductor wafers on a monthly basis from these suppliers.
Additionally, OpenAI is exploring the establishment of two AI data centers in South Korea in collaboration with these firms. Samsung has indicated an interest in investigating the feasibility of constructing floating data centers, which could potentially lower operational costs and reduce environmental impact.
These partnerships represent a strategic expansion for OpenAI as it works to secure the necessary resources—computational power, energy, and funding—for its ambitious AI endeavors. In a related development, Nvidia recently announced plans to invest up to $100 billion into OpenAI to support its scaling efforts.
