The Nintendo Switch 2 has set a remarkable sales milestone, moving over 3.5 million units within just four days of its launch on June 5, making it the quickest-selling Nintendo console to date. This new hybrid console has reportedly broken further sales records, according to recent data from a market research firm, marking the largest launch week for video game hardware in the United States, a title formerly held by Sony’s PlayStation 4.
Nintendo Switch 2 Breaks Launch Records
Throughout its inaugural week, which concluded on June 7, the Switch 2 achieved sales of more than 1.1 million units in the US, based on figures provided by Circana. Notably, these sales figures do not account for purchases through the My Nintendo Store. Circana indicates that the Switch 2’s launch week sales surpassed those of the PS4, establishing a new record for video game hardware sales during a launch week in the US. Mat Piscatella, director and games industry analyst at Circana, affirmed this information via a post on Bluesky.
Nintendo Switch 2 set a new all-time launch week unit sales record for video game hardware in the US, with over 1.1 million units sold during the week ending June 7, 2025 (excludes sales from the My Nintendo Store). The record was previously held by PlayStation 4.

Additionally, Piscatella reported that 79 percent of Switch 2 purchasers in the US also opted for the new Mario Kart World, either physically or through the Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle. However, Nintendo has not disclosed specific sales numbers for the latest Mario Kart installment.
Circana’s retail analysis indicated that Mario Kart World, along with Cyberpunk 2077 and the Switch 2 edition of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, were the top three physical titles sold during the Switch 2’s first week on the market.
Launch Success of the Nintendo Switch 2
The sales achievements underscore an impressive debut for Nintendo’s latest platform. The company highlighted last week that its new console had recorded sales exceeding 3.5 million units within just four days, securing its position as the fastest-selling gaming system in Nintendo’s history.
Doug Bowser, President and COO of Nintendo of America, commented on the sales success, stating, “Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go. We are thankful for their response and happy to see the fun they are already having with Nintendo Switch 2 as they explore new features and games that bring friends and family together in new ways.”
Nintendo is projecting to sell 15 million units of the Switch 2 in the current fiscal year, a figure considered conservative by many analysts and investors given the pent-up demand following a nearly nine-year gap since the original Switch’s release.
During a recent earnings call, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa mentioned that the higher price point of the Switch 2 could present challenges for early adopters.
The Switch 2’s launch was met with enthusiasm, with fans lining up outside retail locations across Japan, the US, and various other markets. The new hybrid console features several enhancements over its predecessor, including a customized, more powerful Nvidia processor, an enlarged display, and redesigned Joy-Con controllers.
