Nintendo of Japan has revised its full-year sales forecast for the Switch console, reducing expectations by 12 percent to 11 million units. The aging device appears to be losing traction in anticipation of a new model set to launch this year.

Despite diversifying its business to include retail stores and featuring beloved characters in theme parks and films, Nintendo still heavily relies on its console sales.

“While we believe that hardware and software sales are strong in our eighth year, we fell short of our target,” stated Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa during an earnings briefing.

In the period from April to December, Nintendo recorded sales of 9.54 million Switch units, contributing to a total of 150.86 million units sold since its launch.

Last month, the company announced plans to unveil its next-generation console to succeed the successful home-portable Switch, with a special Nintendo Direct event scheduled for April 2.

The upcoming Switch 2 is expected to maintain a design similar to its predecessor, which significantly improved Nintendo’s fortunes following the disappointing sales of the Wii U.

Additonally, Nintendo has lowered its operating profit forecast by 22.2 percent, now projecting JPY 280 billion ($1.8 billion or around Rs. 15,678 crore) for the financial year concluding in March.

During the first three quarters of the fiscal year, the company’s profit saw a steep decline of 46.7 percent, falling to JPY 247.6 billion (approximately Rs. 13,882 crore).
