In 2023, we announced the launch of the first comprehensive 3D digital scan of the RMS Titanic wreck, creating a detailed “digital twin” of the ship. This endeavor was led by Magellan Ltd, a deep-sea mapping company, in collaboration with Atlantic Productions during an extensive six-week exploration. The findings from the scan form the basis of a new documentary by National Geographic titled Titanic: The Digital Resurrection, which showcases intriguing preliminary discoveries as experts continue to analyze the data.

The Titanic tragically sank just four days into its maiden voyage across the Atlantic, located approximately 375 miles (600 kilometers) south of Newfoundland. At 11:40 PM ship’s time on April 14, 1912, the vessel collided with the notorious iceberg, initiating a catastrophic influx of water that compromised five of its 16 watertight compartments. This incident resulted in the loss of over 1,500 lives, with only around 710 passengers and crew managing to survive.

For many years, the wreck of the Titanic lay undisturbed on the ocean floor until its discovery in 1985 by an expedition led by Jean-Louis Michel and Robert Ballard. The ship had broken apart upon sinking, with its bow and stern sections resting about one-third of a mile apart. The bow remains largely intact, while the stern displays significant structural damage, indicative of the immense impact upon hitting the seabed. Surrounding the wreck is a debris field that spans an area of 5×3 miles, filled with remnants of the ship, including fragments of furniture, dinnerware, shoes, and other personal belongings.
