Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, has indicated plans to potentially reassign the Twitter account of National Public Radio (NPR) to another entity, according to a statement from the broadcaster on Tuesday.

NPR reported Musk’s suggestion to transfer ownership of its primary account, which operates under the @NPR handle, to a different organization or individual.

This announcement comes on the heels of NPR’s decision to cease posting content to its 52 official Twitter accounts last month. The move was a protest against a label given by Twitter that suggested government interference in NPR’s editorial independence.

Musk initiated a dialogue with NPR through an email sent to a reporter at the organization, inquiring about NPR’s interactions with the platform.

“So is NPR going to start posting on Twitter again, or should we reassign @NPR to another company?” Musk was quoted by NPR in his email correspondence.

In another email, he stated, “Our policy is to recycle handles that are definitively dormant. Same policy applies to all accounts. No special treatment for NPR.”

As of now, neither NPR nor Twitter has responded to a request for comment from Reuters.

Twitter’s policies stipulate that users must log into their accounts at least once every 30 days to avoid the risk of permanent deactivation due to inactivity.

Following NPR’s actions, PBS and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation also halted their Twitter activities due to similar labeling issues.

Although Twitter later removed the controversial labels, the impacted organizations have not resumed their postings, as indicated by their profiles on Tuesday.
