Earlier this year, Microsoft introduced its Xbox AI initiative, showcasing the new Muse AI model capable of generating gameplay experiences. Although it appeared to remain a work-in-progress from Microsoft Research, the company has now opened access for Copilot users to experience Muse through an AI-generated rendition of Quake II.

This technology demonstration is part of Microsoft’s broader Copilot for Gaming initiative and features a browser-playable version of Quake II. The game’s current iteration consists of basic levels, with fuzzy visuals of enemies and limited player interactions, along with restrictions on the duration of gameplay.

While the original Muse AI demonstration was limited to a frame rate of 10fps and a resolution of 300 x 180, this latest version operates at a playable frame rate and a resolution of 640 x 360. Nonetheless, it remains a rudimentary experience, serving primarily as a glimpse into potential advancements in gaming technology.

Microsoft continues to position Muse as a tool for game developers to prototype new games. When Muse was first revealed in February, the company indicated its intent to explore how the AI could enhance classic video games like Quake II and adapt them for current gaming platforms.

Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, discussed this vision, stating, “One can envision a scenario where, based on gameplay data and videos, a model learns from old games and makes them accessible across various platforms where these models can operate. We’ve identified game preservation as a focus area, and the capacity of these models to learn gameplay mechanics without the original engine or hardware opens a multitude of possibilities.”

It appears that Microsoft is broadening the training of Muse beyond just Bleeding Edge, hinting at the future introduction of more interactive AI gaming experiences within Copilot Labs. Additionally, the company aims to evolve Copilot into an in-game coach that observes gameplay and offers strategic advice. Some of this functionality will soon be accessible to Windows Insiders via the upcoming Copilot Vision.
