Microsoft is transforming its Edge browser by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) agents. On Monday, the tech powerhouse from Redmond unveiled the experimental Copilot Mode, enabling the AI-fueled browser to function as a collaborative partner for users. This advanced chatbot comprehends context from all open tabs and is capable of responding to queries, comparing products, sourcing relevant information, and more. Looking ahead, Microsoft asserts that the AI agent will eventually be able to autonomously complete tasks and facilitate user purchases.

Enhanced Capabilities for Edge Browser

In a blog post, Microsoft elaborated on the introduction of Copilot Mode in its Edge browser. This innovation positions Edge alongside other browsers like Perplexity’s Comet and The Browser Company’s Dia, which also feature similar AI capabilities. However, Microsoft has opted for a distinct approach; instead of incorporating a side panel accessible at any moment, it has introduced a dedicated tab for Copilot that serves as a user assistance hub.

Users can also access the chatbot through a dynamic window situated at the top of the interface for specific tab-related tasks. According to Microsoft, the dedicated Copilot tab, featuring a text box at the bottom, includes chat, search, and web navigation functionality. The AI can tap into contextual information from any open tab to address user queries and provide step-by-step instructions for various tasks.

For instance, Microsoft illustrates that if a user has multiple tabs open displaying different hotels in a city, they can navigate to the Copilot tab and request the AI to identify the option nearest to the beach that includes a full kitchen. Copilot will then examine each webpage, evaluate the hotels, and present the best match that meets those criteria.

Furthermore, Copilot in Edge now accommodates voice commands, allowing users to articulate their requests. Microsoft has also disclosed two forthcoming features. First, Copilot will soon seek permission to access the user’s browsing history and credentials. This enhancement will provide the AI agent with deeper context regarding user inquiries and enable it to perform tasks like hotel bookings or recommending tutorial videos.

Second, the Edge browser’s Copilot will be capable of collecting data from both currently and previously opened tabs to gain insight into the projects users are engaged in. Based on this analysis, it will be able to propose subsequent steps for these projects. When users reopen the browser, Copilot will display various cards related to different projects along with a selection of suggested tabs for the next actions.

Importantly, Copilot Mode is being offered free of charge for a limited period across all regions where the chatbot is available, although the company has not disclosed the timeframe for this offer. The feature is also opt-in, allowing users to activate it as desired. Those interested in experiencing this new functionality can click here.
