On Thursday, Meta launched its Imagine Me feature in India, expanding access to this artificial intelligence (AI) tool, which had previously been available only in the United States and a limited number of other countries. Indian users can now create unique AI-generated images of themselves across various styles, contexts, and scenarios. The feature is integrated within the Meta AI interface and accessible on all major platforms. Similar to other AI functionalities offered by the chatbot, Imagine Me is freely available to users.

In a press release, the social media company based in Menlo Park highlighted that the rollout of the Imagine Me feature in India comes nearly a year after its initial introduction in July 2023. The initial launch allowed users to personalize their experiences through AI-generated imagery.

Imagine Me operates by analyzing the user’s facial features and utilizing personalization models to embed this likeness into various creative settings. For example, a user could prompt Meta AI with a request such as “Imagine me as a 90s rockstar,” leading to an AI-generated image depicting the user’s face on a rock guitarist performing on stage.

The feature can be accessed through the Meta AI app, as well as on Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. While it has been observed on Android devices, it is yet to be confirmed on iOS platforms at this time. To begin generating images, users must complete a brief setup, which involves navigating to the Meta AI chat interface and inputting the phrase “Imagine me as” followed by their specific request.

Upon initiating the process, Meta AI prompts users to permit facial data analysis, capturing images from different angles. After this setup, users can return to the chat interface and continue by typing “Imagine me as” along with their desired scenarios. Suggested situations include “on the moon,” “in a Renaissance painting,” or “wearing futuristic fashion.”

Importantly, the need for facial data means that users can only generate images of themselves and not others. The initial setup occurs only once per user, limiting the feature’s use to the individual who completed the setup. Additionally, the images created are not hyperrealistic, reducing the chances of users confusing them for actual photographs.
