After over ten years without new offerings, Logitech has unveiled a fresh solar-powered keyboard today. The Signature Slim Solar Plus K980, priced at $99.99, operates entirely on light, similar to its predecessor, the K760. This model does not include a USB port or replaceable batteries. It utilizes a solar cell that harnesses ambient or artificial light—requiring a minimum of 200 lux—to recharge its battery, which Logitech claims has a lifespan of up to ten years. When fully charged, users can utilize the K980 in total darkness for a period of four months.

In a response to inquiries regarding the K980’s battery, Logitech spokesperson Melvin Dilanchian informed Technology News that it is designed to be user-replaceable, housed within a secure plastic casing, with replacement parts available through iFixIt.

In addition to its solar charging features, the K980 boasts a conventional full-size layout that includes key labels for both Windows and macOS, directional keys, and a numeric keypad. The function row is preset to manage media control, screen brightness, and volume levels, with options for customization in the Logi Options Plus app available for both Mac and Windows users. Additional features include a mic mute key, a camera toggle switch, and an Action key that allows for personalized programming via the app. Notably, it introduces an AI Launch key.

The AI key is configured to launch Copilot on Windows PCs (with ChromeOS defaulting to Gemini) but can be customized via Logitech’s application to open ChatGPT or an AI prompt builder. Alternatively, users can assign it to execute one of Logitech’s Smart Actions, such as performing a web search. The Action Key, identifiable as a large “O,” along with other keys, can also be set to execute these macros, utilizing either predefined settings or user-created options through the app.

The versatile graphite version of the K980 is compatible with both environments, featuring key labels for Windows and macOS. North American Mac users may prefer the off-white model that excludes Windows key labels, while maintaining the same price point.

The keyboard allows pairing with up to three Bluetooth devices, facilitating effortless transitions with the press of a button. Additionally, it can connect via a Logitech Bolt USB transmitter, which is not included in the packaging. Previous models featured built-in LED indicators for insufficient light to charge the keyboard, while the K980’s power LED simply changes from green to red when additional charging is needed. This feature encourages users to install the Logitech Options Plus app, which includes an indicator for light availability.

Logitech’s K750 solar keyboard from 2010 featured playful LED indicators that informed users about the light levels necessary for charging. The new K980 model omits this functionality in favor of directing users to download the Logi Options Plus app for similar insights.

The trend for solar-powered devices appears to be resurging in 2025, with Lenovo recently launching a self-charging wireless keyboard for $99.99, which was first introduced at CES 2025 in January. Preliminary impressions suggest it may outperform the K980, though it has not yet been tested by critics. Features such as adjustable legs for ergonomic tilting and a spill-resistant design, along with a USB-C charging port, add to its appeal compared to the K980.
