Since its announcement during the PlayStation Showcase in 2021, the development of Star Wars: The Knights of the Old Republic Remake has faced numerous challenges. The remake of the acclaimed 2003 RPG experienced an indefinite delay and underwent a change in developers in 2022, with Saber Interactive taking over from Aspyr. Recently, Saber, along with other studios affiliated with the Embracer Group, was sold for $247 million, raising more questions about the future of the project. Despite the turmoil, Saber has reassured fans that development is ongoing.
In an interview with IGN on Wednesday, Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch affirmed that work on the KOTOR remake is actively progressing, confirming that the studio has retained the project after parting ways with the Embracer Group.
Karch emphasized the studio’s commitment, stating, “It is clear and obvious that we are still working on the game. What I will say is that the game is alive and well, and we’re dedicated to making sure we exceed consumer expectations.”
While Karch did not provide additional details regarding the game’s status or a projected release date, industry speculations suggest that it may be some time before The Knights of the Old Republic Remake is made available to the public. During discussions surrounding Saber’s separation from Embracer Group, CEO Lars Wingefors hinted that the game could be over a year away from release.
The remake was first teased in 2021 during the PlayStation Showcase, with announcements indicating it would come to PlayStation 5 and PC. However, a full gameplay trailer has yet to be unveiled. The project, initially managed by Aspyr Media, was expected to launch by the end of 2022.
In July 2022, after three years of development under Aspyr, the project was delayed indefinitely. Reports indicated that an internal demo did not meet the expectations of partners Sony and Lucasfilm.
Later in 2022, Saber Interactive took over the development duties. Bloomberg reported at that time that a more realistic launch timeframe for the remake would likely be 2025.
The original Knights of the Old Republic, released in 2003 for Xbox and PC, was developed by renowned RPG developers BioWare. It has since been ported to mobile devices and, more recently, to the Nintendo Switch in 2021.
