The Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) is anticipated to conclude that Google has breached the country’s antitrust regulations, according to a report by Nikkei Asia published on Sunday.

The regulatory body is poised to issue a cease and desist order, compelling Google to stop its alleged monopolistic practices, the sources indicate.

Google has yet to respond to requests for comment, while efforts to reach the JFTC for a statement were unsuccessful.

The investigation into Google began last October, focusing on potential violations of antimonopoly laws related to web search services. This move follows similar probes undertaken by regulatory authorities in Europe and other major economies.

As the leading web browser globally, Chrome plays a crucial role in Google’s operations, enabling the collection of user data that enhances the company’s advertising effectiveness and profitability.

In a related development last month, the U.S. Department of Justice advocated in court for the divestiture of Google’s Chrome browser by its parent company, Alphabet. The aim is to prevent Google from re-entering the browser market for a period of five years, as part of measures to dismantle its search monopoly.
