The Sony State of Play broadcast on June 4 (late on June 5 in India) showcased a variety of upcoming games for the PS5, including the debut of IO Interactive’s highly anticipated James Bond title. The three-minute announcement trailer provided insights into the studio’s unique interpretation of the legendary MI6 agent.
This new installment is a standalone retelling of Bond’s origins, centering on a 26-year-old version of the character as he embarks on his journey to achieve ’00’ status. Starting off as an impulsive Royal Navy air crewman, Bond’s reckless bravery eventually propels him into MI6’s training program, where he strives to earn his place as a top spy.
According to IO Interactive, “For the first time ever, fans will be able to experience Bond’s ascent at MI6 from a young 26-year-old recruit into a full-fledged spy – immersing them in the exotic and dangerous world of espionage captured in the films.”
The game promises to take players on a global adventure, allowing them to interact with both allies and adversaries, often encountering situations where cunning, brute force, or charming wit must be employed to navigate challenges.
Players can expect to meet several familiar characters from the Bond franchise, including allies such as M, Q, and Moneypenny.
Built using IO Interactive’s Glacier engine, 007 First Light is designed as a third-person action-adventure experience, featuring a dynamic combination of combat, driving, stealth, and gadget mechanics, all evidentially presented in the trailer.
“We’re pouring our energy and passion for the franchise into creating a cinematic adventure that pushes the boundaries of what a James Bond game can be, while telling a fresh, new story. We can’t wait for players and fans to discover an experience tailor-made for them,” stated IO Interactive CEO Hasan Abrak.
Scheduled for release in 2026, 007 First Light will be accessible on PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game will also feature enhancements for PS5 Pro, utilizing Sony’s PSSR technology to deliver a smooth 60 fps in Quality Mode. Players can currently wishlist the game on all supported platforms.
