Instagram is currently developing an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) feature designed to revolutionize video editing for its users. This advanced tool leverages Meta’s Movie Gen AI model, a research initiative known for its ability to create videos from text prompts. Unlike traditional video generation, this feature focuses on enhancing existing videos captured with real cameras and featuring real people, allowing users to alter elements such as outfits, backgrounds, and even personal appearance.
Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram, previewed the upcoming AI editing tool in a Reel, providing a glimpse into its functionalities. In the brief video, he demonstrated various capabilities of the feature and discussed how it is intended to work. Mosseri indicated that while the tool is still in the development phase, there are plans to release it next year.
The demonstration showcased how the tool could modify Mosseri’s outfit, adorn him with a gold chain, and even include a hippopotamus swimming in a pool in the background. Additionally, various effects were combined to position him in diverse settings, such as beside a snowy mountain or in a desert landscape.
In the caption of the video, Mosseri revealed that the AI editing tool derives its power from the Movie Gen AI model, which was first introduced in October. This multi-modal model boasts four core capabilities: video generation, personalized video generation, precise video editing, and audio generation. Furthermore, it can synchronize video and audio generation, although it is not yet available for public use.
“I’m super excited about Movie Gen, our early AI research model that will let you change nearly any aspect of your videos with a simple text prompt. Hoping to bring this to Instagram next year,” Mosseri shared in his caption.
Preliminary insights suggest that the upcoming AI feature will primarily utilize the model’s precise video editing capabilities. Meta emphasized in its announcement that the model can execute localized edits, such as adding, removing, or replacing specific elements, as well as making broader changes to backgrounds or styles. Importantly, the AI model is designed to preserve the integrity of the original content by focusing only on relevant pixels during the editing process.
