Instagram has launched a new feature in its iOS application aimed at streamlining the process of capturing and sharing Stories. The latest addition is a lock screen widget that grants users direct access to the Story Camera, enabling them to take a photo or record a video quickly and upload it as a Story. Alongside this enhancement, Instagram is reportedly exploring additional features, including a Friend Map that may function similarly to the Snap Map.
This new widget was introduced quietly, without an official announcement from Instagram or a statement from Adam Mosseri, the platform’s Head. Over the weekend, users took to social media to share their experiences with the feature, and Gadgets 360 has verified its functionality.
The widget, named Story Camera, is designed to fit into a 1×1 grid on the lock screen. Its icon consists of a simple circle with a plus sign. The accompanying description states, “Open the Instagram Story Camera directly from your Lock Screen,” which accurately reflects its purpose. When users add the widget, tapping on it will launch the story camera interface, allowing them to either snap a quick picture or record a video and post it instantly, or select an image from their gallery.
One limitation of this widget is that it does not allow users to utilize the native camera app on the iPhone, which typically offers superior image quality. However, it serves as a convenient option for users who prioritize speed over quality when posting Stories. Additionally, the Story Camera offers various in-app filters for users to apply. The feature was rolled out last week and is expected to be available to all users worldwide in the upcoming days, though it necessitates iOS 16 or higher, as older versions do not support lock screen widgets.
In other developments, a tipster has suggested that Instagram is developing a feature that will enable users to view the last active location of their friends on a map. Tentatively named Friend Map, this feature may allow users to see friends’ locations, provided they have shared their location data. Users could also leave and read notes connected to this feature, enhancing social interactions on the platform.
