Honor has officially unveiled the Magic V5, claiming it to be the thinnest foldable smartphone currently available, albeit with some caveats. This assertion applies specifically to the device’s Ivory White variant and excludes consideration of its protruding camera module. The phone has been launched today in China, with plans for an international rollout to follow shortly.

With a thickness of just 8.8mm when closed, the V5 indeed surpasses the Oppo Find N5, which measures 8.9mm. The minuscule difference may be nearly undetectable to users, though a slight curvature in the design makes the Honor device feel marginally thinner. However, this claim of slimness is only valid for the white model, as alternative color options are a tad thicker at 9mm, suggesting variations in the materials employed for their finishes.

A more significant consideration comes from the camera design. The triple rear camera module on the Magic V5 is markedly taller than that of the Oppo, contributing to an overall perception of thickness. While the enhanced specifications, which include higher resolution sensors and quicker apertures, may justify this added bulk, it somewhat undermines the claim of being the “world’s thinnest” foldable.

When opened, the V5 frames itself at 4.1mm, edging past the Oppo’s measurement of 4.2mm. Notably, both devices remain thicker than Huawei’s Mate X2, which reaches a remarkable 3.6mm at its slimmest point. However, that design comes without a USB-C port on the device.

The competition for the slimmest foldable is not new for Honor. Prior to the launch of Oppo’s Find N5 this year, Honor’s Magic V3 held the title. Anticipation is rising as Samsung prepares to introduce its Galaxy Z Fold 7, which may slightly surpass Honor’s offering in thickness. Additionally, the Magic V5 may also lay claim to being the lightest foldable device, weighing in at 217 grams, on par with Vivo’s recently launched X Fold 5.

Discussions surrounding minute differences in size and weight indeed highlight the current state of foldable technology, which may be reaching a plateau. In previous comments regarding the Oppo Find N5, it was suggested that manufacturers are now facing challenges in delivering significant advancements in foldable technology without altering existing designs. As the sector evolves, new strategies for attention and innovation will be essential for future releases.

In terms of specifications, the Magic V5 does not disappoint. It is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, features up to 16GB of RAM, and is equipped with a 5,820mAh battery. Both its internal and external displays are 120Hz LTPO OLED screens, offering a smooth visual experience. The device also supports wireless charging and has an IP58 and IP59 rating for dust and water resistance, ensuring durability similar to that of many non-foldable smartphones.
