Grand Theft Auto 6 is officially slated for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X in the Fall of 2025, although PC gamers may face a longer wait. Rockstar Games traditionally prioritizes current-generation consoles for its game launches before eventually releasing a PC version after a couple of years. Although no specific timeline for the PC version of GTA 6 has been confirmed, Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, has hinted that the much-anticipated game will ultimately be available on that platform.
PC Launch Anticipated for GTA 6
In a recent interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick discussed Rockstar’s pattern of releasing games on various platforms following their initial console launches.
“For titles like Civilization 7, we see simultaneous availability on console, PC, and Switch. However, with others in our range, we’re not always launching across all platforms at once. Rockstar has typically begun with certain platforms and then expanded to others over time,” Zelnick stated, in advance of Take-Two’s recent Q3 2025 earnings call.
His comments came while discussing Civilization 7, the turn-based strategy game by Firaxis Games, which debuted on February 11 across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
Rockstar’s Pattern with PC Releases
Historically, Rockstar Games has taken a considerable amount of time before making its titles available on PC. For example, Grand Theft Auto 5 was released for PS3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013, followed by its arrival on PS4 and Xbox One in November 2014. The PC edition, which included updates and new features, came nearly two years later in April 2015.
In contrast, the PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2 was available more quickly, launching a year after the console versions on PS4 and Xbox One in October 2018, arriving on PC in November 2019.
Nonetheless, with GTA 6 coming in late 2025, it is possible that the PC version could be released sooner than past titles. The delay for GTA 5’s PC edition was largely due to additional development time, whereas Grand Theft Auto 4’s PC version was released just seven months after its launch on PS3 and Xbox 360 in April 2008.
If GTA 6 launches in the latter part of 2025, it is reasonable to anticipate a PC version could be ready by 2026 at the earliest.

Expected Spike in Console Sales from GTA 6
In the same interview, Zelnick highlighted the growing significance of the PC gaming market. Sony has increasingly opted to release its first-party titles on PC after a period of exclusivity on the PS5. This trend is exemplified by certain live service titles, such as Helldivers 2, launching simultaneously on both PS5 and PC. In contrast, Microsoft has adopted a strategy of launching all first-party games on Xbox and PC concurrently.
Zelnick remarked that failing to launch GTA 6 on PC would be a major oversight, as sales from the PC versions of multi-platform games could account for over 40 percent of total revenue.
However, he expressed confidence that the upcoming release of GTA 6 would significantly bolster console sales, indicating that the title could rejuvenate the sagging sales of the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. Industry experts believe that GTA 6 is on track to become the biggest entertainment launch ever, prompting many potential players to purchase new consoles just to play the game.
“Historically, when we have a major title on the market, it drives console sales,” Zelnick noted. He predicted that 2025 will see a “meaningful uptick” in sales for PS5 and Xbox Series S/X driven by a heavy release schedule.
During Take-Two’s latest Q3 2025 earnings call, Zelnick reiterated the Fall 2025 launch plan for GTA 6. In addition to the flagship title from Rockstar, Take-Two is also preparing to release Mafia: The Old Country and Borderlands 4 later this year.
