Grammarly has revealed its plans to acquire Superhuman, an innovative email application that leverages artificial intelligence (AI). The integration aims to establish a comprehensive productivity platform, featuring sophisticated AI experiences powered by intelligent agents. The company emphasized the choice to target an email app, noting that email stands as Grammarly’s “number-one use case.” In their announcement, Grammarly hinted at several AI functionalities that users can anticipate with the forthcoming platform.
Grammarly Aspires to Develop an AI Productivity Platform
In a press release, Grammarly disclosed its intention to acquire Superhuman, which has been offering a web-based interface since its launch in 2017 and introduced an Android app in 2023. The application includes features such as AI-generated email completions, automatic drafting of follow-up messages, and AI-driven email categorization.
While specific financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed, Grammarly indicated that this move would pave the way for its goals in establishing an AI productivity platform. The strategic choice of an email app stems from the company’s observation that “email is the number-one use case of Grammarly,” with the AI assistant reportedly reviewing over 50 million emails weekly across more than 20 different email clients.
The press release highlighted that although various AI providers have incorporated technology into email applications, significant gaps persist, primarily due to inadequate integration that results in a fragmented user experience. Grammarly believes this acquisition will help rectify these issues.
While details about the productivity app remain under wraps, Grammarly has proposed some potential features for the new platform. These may include using AI agents to organize emails, schedule meetings, perform in-depth content research, and compose emails in the user’s voice.
“This is the future we’ve been building toward since day one: AI that works where people work, not where companies want them to work. Email isn’t just another app; it’s where professionals spend significant portions of their day, and it’s the perfect staging ground for orchestrating multiple AI agents simultaneously,” stated Shishir Mehrotra, CEO of Grammarly.
