Grammarly is set to acquire the popular email application Superhuman, as announced in a recent press release.

According to Grammarly, email is the leading application among professional users, with the AI writing assistant helping to refine over 50 million emails weekly, spanning more than 20 email platforms. The acquisition of Superhuman aligns with Grammarly’s strategy, providing the company with its own proprietary email app to promote its functionality.

The press release suggests that Grammarly harbors broader aspirations that extend into the realm of artificial intelligence, specifically the development of AI agents.

“Grammarly is transitioning into a versatile productivity platform for applications and agents, aiming to become a multi-product entity featuring hundreds of intelligent, task-oriented agents,” the company stated. “Email serves as an optimal landscape for this multi-agent support, as professionals invest upwards of three hours daily in their inboxes, making email a fundamental element of any productivity toolset.”

Grammarly envisions a “future platform” that will facilitate scenarios where users can collaborate with several agents at once, such as a communication agent, sales agent, support agent, and marketing agent jointly assisting in drafting a customer memo. However, the real challenge lies in whether these ambitious plans will be realized and if Grammarly can effectively compete with offerings from AI leaders like OpenAI and Google, both of whom are pursuing similar goals.

Last year, Grammarly completed the acquisition of productivity startup Coda, with Coda’s co-founder and CEO Shishir Mehrotra assuming leadership of the newly formed organization.
