Google is set to enhance its artificial intelligence chatbot, Gemini, with a new feature that facilitates connections to GitHub repositories. This announcement was made on Wednesday, highlighting that Gemini is now capable of executing various coding tasks. These tasks include generating and modifying functions, providing explanations for code, fielding inquiries about the codebase, and debugging. Currently, access to this feature is limited to paid subscribers of the platform. In addition, the company revealed plans to extend Gemini’s availability to a broader array of devices, such as smartwatches, smart TVs, and car infotainment systems.

Gemini Advanced Can Now Access GitHub Repos

The official Gemini app account shared the news in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), stating, “Gemini Advanced now connects with GitHub, making it a more powerful coding assistant.” Users of the latest mobile app version or web client will be able to take advantage of this new functionality, which is exclusively available to Gemini Advanced subscribers.

While the update does not improve the chatbot’s inherent coding skills, it personalizes the user experience. Subscribers can now link the AI to their own repositories, enabling them to inquire about specific code or request debugging assistance.

According to Google, this feature empowers Gemini to generate and modify code, analyze and elucidate functions, respond to queries, and debug effectively. Demonstrations revealed that Gemini can assess code and suggest enhancements for efficiency.

To utilize this functionality, Gemini Advanced users can click on the plus icon (+) adjacent to the text field and select the “import code” option. Following this, a new text box will prompt users to input the GitHub URL, accommodating both public and private repositories. In India, the subscription fee for Gemini Advanced is set at Rs. 1,950 per month.

Earlier this week, Google also announced that Gemini will be expanded to additional Android devices. The company indicated plans for the integration of Gemini into a wider range of devices, including smartwatches, smart TVs, in-car systems, as well as headsets and smart glasses in the near future.
