During a quarterly earnings call on Wednesday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the AI Mode feature in Search has surpassed 100 million monthly active users in the United States and India. This milestone reflects the growing popularity of Google’s AI initiatives. The company also noted that another AI feature, AI Overviews, now boasts over two billion monthly users and is accessible in 40 languages across 200 countries and territories. Furthermore, a recent report indicated that Google is actively rolling out Gemini 2.5 Pro and Deep Search within AI Mode for users.

AI Mode in Search Hits 100 Million Monthly Active Users

Pichai shared insights in a blog post, noting that AI Mode has garnered positive feedback for its effectiveness in handling longer, more complex search queries. Despite being limited to the US and India, the feature has quickly attracted 100 million monthly active users.

The rollout of AI Mode began in the US in May and expanded to India in early July, indicating that any Indian user utilizing the feature would contribute to this significant user count.

Looking ahead, Pichai emphasized Google’s commitment to enhancing AI Mode with new features in the near future. Recent announcements included the introduction of a model picker feature and Deep Search, both of which are reportedly becoming available to users. However, the Gadgets 360 team has not yet encountered these new functionalities.

The first new feature is the Gemini 2.5 Pro AI model, which users can select through a dropdown menu adjacent to the “AI Mode” option. This upgrade will enable users to pose questions related to mathematics, reasoning, and coding directly within Search.

The second innovation, Deep Search, is built on Gemini’s dep research capabilities. This mode allows users to query topics that may be too intricate or specialized for AI Mode, enabling it to conduct broader searches to retrieve pertinent information.

In response to inquiries regarding the distinction between Gemini and AI Mode, which appear to fulfill similar purposes, Pichai clarified that while overlaps exist, each product addresses unique use cases. He explained that AI Mode is designed primarily for information-seeking queries, while Gemini serves users who require more of an interactive assistant experience. “Of course, there will be areas served by both applications, and over time, I believe we can streamline the experience for our users,” Pichai stated.
