Google is set to broaden access to its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, Gemini, for younger audiences. In a recent announcement, the tech powerhouse from Mountain View revealed that users under the age of 13 in the United States, as well as those of equivalent ages in other countries, will soon be able to utilize the AI chatbot across Android, iOS, and web platforms. The company will provide tools for parents and school administrators to manage and oversee this access, particularly when a school account is employed.

Gemini Now Accessible to Younger Users

In March, Google initially declared its plans to extend Gemini’s features to younger users, incorporating supervision tools and parental controls. According to a report from 9to5Google, the company is actively communicating with parents about the forthcoming availability of this AI chatbot for children through dedicated emails.

Google has identified a variety of scenarios where Gemini could be beneficial, including assisting with homework, answering questions, and aiding in story creation. Once launched, children will have the ability to interact with the AI chatbot either on the web or through mobile applications. Furthermore, it appears that users can configure Gemini as their default assistant on Android devices.

The email communication with parents includes a cautionary note indicating that Gemini may not always provide accurate information, encouraging children to verify responses before using any advice given. Google has also made it clear that while Gemini can engage in human-like conversation, it does not possess human-like reasoning or emotional capacity.

In its previous statements, Google expressed that the decision to extend Gemini’s reach to younger users was influenced by feedback from parents, educators, and child development specialists. The firm asserted that with appropriate safety measures in place, “AI can be a valuable tool for learning and creativity.”

To ensure oversight, Google will allow parents to manage their children’s access to Gemini through the Family Link app, which facilitates the administration of Google accounts for minors. This feature will enable parents to receive notifications regarding their children’s use of Gemini and to impose restrictions as necessary. Additionally, for children using the AI chatbot via school accounts, administrators will have similar oversight capabilities through the Google Admin console.
