On Thursday, Alphabet’s Google announced that it had rectified a temporary global service disruption that impacted several high-profile platforms, including the music streaming service Spotify and the instant messaging application Discord. The company confirmed, “The issue with Google Chat, Google Meet, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Google Cloud Search, Google Tasks, Google Voice has been resolved for all affected users.”
Google also indicated that an analysis of the incident would be made available following an internal investigation.
The disruption notably hindered services on various platforms that depend on Google’s cloud-managed services and infrastructure, including Snapchat and Spotify.
According to the Google Cloud dashboard, engineering teams were actively addressing lingering issues that continued to affect some services.
The outage commenced at approximately 1:50 p.m. ET, with Downdetector.com reporting 14,729 incidents of Google Cloud being inaccessible in the U.S. by 2:32 p.m. ET.
During the peak of the service outage, Spotify recorded around 46,000 reports, while Discord saw approximately 10,992 reports of issues in the U.S. However, by 6:18 p.m. ET, the number of reports had significantly decreased, with Spotify showing just over 1,000 and Discord down to about 200.
The figures provided by Downdetector stem from user-submitted reports and suggest that the actual number of affected users may have been higher.
