Google has introduced enhanced Veo 3 software capabilities to the video generation feature within Google Photos. Users in the United States can now create four-second videos from static images by selecting either the “Subtle movements” or the more adventurous “I’m feeling lucky” options found in the Create tab. Michael Marconi, a spokesperson for Google, mentioned that users can have their photo subjects dance or be showered with confetti.
The newly launched Veo 3 replaces the previous Veo 2 model in Google Photos, which was first rolled out in July. Marconi noted that this upgrade will enhance the resolution and quality of the videos generated from still images.
This update is part of Google’s broader initiative to integrate video generation capabilities for its users. At the I/O event in May, Google unveiled Veo 3 alongside its text-to-video software, Flow. In August, a limited version of the AI-powered video editor, called Vids, became available to users, featuring an AI-generated avatar capable of delivering messages on their behalf.
A key highlight of Veo 3, according to Josh Woodward, Vice President of Gemini at Google, is its “incredibly realistic” sound generation. Initially, Veo 3 was offered through the $250 per month “AI Ultra” plan. Now, users of the free version of Photos can access limited Veo 3-powered video generation features—sound is not included—using a set number of their pictures each day. Ultra and Pro subscribers have more extensive access to the video generation options.
The AI tool is integrated into the Photos Create tab. Users can not only animate their still images but also reformat a photo into a 3D animation, which can subsequently be turned into a video. In addition, a highlights feature allows users to compile photo montages based on keywords entered in their gallery.
