Google has joined the ranks of AI service providers targeting the higher education sector. Effective immediately, college students in the United States can enroll in Google’s One AI Premium plan at no cost, bypassing the customary $20 monthly subscription fee until June 30, 2026.
To take advantage of this offer, students must register before the promotion concludes on June 30, 2025, according to Google spokesperson Alex Joseph. He noted that a valid .edu email address will be required for verification. Additionally, Joseph mentioned to Technology News that users will receive an email ahead of their subscription’s end date, providing ample opportunity to cancel if they choose.
The One AI Premium plan offers 2TB of cloud storage along with a suite of Google’s artificial intelligence tools designed to enhance academic performance. Among the features included are Gemini 2.5 Pro-powered applications, such as Gemini Advanced, which serves as Google’s alternative to ChatGPT Plus, and Gemini Deep Research, a tool for summarizing complex subjects and transforming reports into podcast-style audio presentations.
Further study assistance comes from NotebookLM Plus, which provides additional audio summarization features, and the ability to integrate Google’s Gemini assistant directly within Docs, Sheets, and Slides. New functionalities also feature in this plan, such as Google’s Veo 2 text-to-video AI model and Whisk, which enables users to blend text and image prompts to create unique outputs.
This month has seen similar initiatives from OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which are aiming to draw students to their AI tools with free offerings. The focus on academia reflects its significance as a market, especially given the rising prominence of AI technologies, which pose considerable competition to Google’s established web search business.
