The Google Home extension for Gemini is reportedly being made available to users worldwide. According to recent reports, the rollout of this new feature will occur over the coming weeks, enabling the Gemini application on both Android and iOS to control smart home devices connected to Google Home. This enhancement will allow users to issue commands in natural language, which the AI chatbot can interpret to fulfill various tasks. Currently, Gemini has the capability to manage several Google services, including Google Workspace apps, Google Maps, YouTube, and YouTube Music.
Google Home Gemini Extension Deploying to Users
A report by 9to5Google indicates that the Google Home extension for Gemini has begun its rollout to all users on Android and iOS platforms. Initially released in public preview back in November 2024, the extension is now set to be accessible globally in the upcoming weeks. Some users have already confirmed its presence, although staff members from Gadgets 360 have been unable to independently verify this information.
Once available, users can enable the extension through the Gemini web client or the mobile application. For those using the web client, they can go to Settings > Extensions > Google Home and toggle the appropriate setting. Users accessing the app should tap their profile picture, find the Extensions menu, and select @Google Home, followed by activating the toggle button.
According to Google’s support page, this new Gemini extension can interface with various smart home devices, including lights, switches, thermostats, air conditioning units, smart TVs, washing machines, and more, provided these devices are connected to Google Home.
With the Gemini extension, users will have the ability to issue multi-step and complex commands in natural language. The AI chatbot is designed to execute these actions efficiently. For example, a user could instruct the app to “Set the hall for a gaming session,” which would automatically adjust the lighting and air conditioning to preferred levels and turn on the Google TV-enabled smart TV. It can also respond to more vague commands, like “Set the AC to a temperature comfortable for sleeping.”
Nonetheless, there are some limitations to consider. The feature currently supports both text and audio inputs but exclusively accepts prompts in English. Additionally, commands related to security devices that require a PIN are not supported, nor can it stream video feeds from cameras, and executing routines is not possible at this time.
