Google has unveiled the latest version of ChromeOS, which introduces a new feature for syncing desktops across devices. This is particularly beneficial for users who operate on multiple Chromebooks throughout their workday. Additionally, the update enhances the AI-generated wallpaper options for Chromebook Plus devices, now featuring a versatile prompting field.
The new desk sync functionality facilitates seamless device transitions. It allows for the synchronization of windows, tabs, and cookies, making it easier to switch devices without losing your progress. Google highlights that this feature will be especially advantageous for professionals in sectors such as healthcare, hospitality, and manufacturing, who frequently utilize shared devices. Users can opt in to this feature through the ChromeOS settings under the “Desk sync” option.
The updated ChromeOS version 138 also brings significant improvements to AI-generated wallpapers, which are exclusive to Chromebook Plus models. In contrast to the previous release that imposed restrictions on art styles and prompt formats, the latest update offers a freeform text input for user prompts. This change enhances user creativity and customization in wallpaper generation. For those who prefer guidance, an “Inspire me” button is available to generate ideas for wallpapers and prompts.
In addition, Chromebook Plus users will benefit from the introduction of the AI-powered “Help me read” feature, designed to simplify complex or specialized texts. All devices running ChromeOS will also gain the ability to utilize Lens for searching on-screen content and selecting text directly from images, alongside a range of bug fixes aimed at enhancing accessibility.
