Google is broadening the range of languages supported by its Gemini-powered artificial intelligence (AI) feature, known as ‘Help me write,’ in Gmail. Announced on Monday, the update aims to enhance accessibility for users who speak different languages, allowing them to create and refine email drafts with AI assistance. This tool was originally introduced at Google I/O 2023 and enables users to generate emails from natural language prompts or improve existing drafts for clarity and tone.
Gmail’s ‘Help Me Write’ Receives Enhanced Language Support
In a recent blog post, Google outlined the latest enhancements to Gmail as part of its ongoing Workspace updates. The company confirmed that the Gemini-powered ‘Help me write’ feature now includes support for Japanese and Korean, in addition to the languages already offered. This development allows users fluent in these languages to utilize the AI tool for composing or editing their emails.
Last month, the tool gained functionality for additional languages, including French, German, and Italian. With the current updates, ‘Help me write’ now accommodates a total of eight languages, including English, Portuguese, and Spanish.
Powered by Google’s Gemini AI models, ‘Help me write’ is accessible through both the web client and mobile applications, identifiable by a sparkle icon that has become associated with Gemini. Users can click on this icon and provide a description of the desired message, prompting the AI to generate the email content accordingly. Customization options include specifying the tone, word choice, and length of the message, allowing the AI to adapt to user preferences.
Beyond creating new emails, the tool is also capable of enhancing existing drafts. It can adjust the tone, expand on the message, or streamline the content for brevity. This integration within Gmail offers a seamless experience, allowing users to make revisions without the need to exit the platform.
