GitHub inadvertently revealed details about OpenAI’s upcoming GPT-5 models in a now-removed blog post. The announcement highlighted that GPT-5 will come in four variants and promises significant enhancements in areas such as reasoning, code quality, and overall user experience.
Reddit users spotted the post claiming GPT-5 is now generally available within GitHub models, before it was quickly taken down. An archived version indicates that GPT-5 features “enhanced agentic capabilities” and can manage “complex coding tasks with minimal prompting.”
The four variants of GPT-5 identified by GitHub include:
- gpt-5: Aimed at logical reasoning and multi-step processes.
- gpt-5-mini: A simplified model designed for cost-effective applications.
- gpt-5-nano: Tailored for high-speed operations, suitable for low-latency needs.
- gpt-5-chat: Created for sophisticated, natural, multimodal dialogues in enterprise contexts.
Earlier reports indicated that OpenAI was gearing up to debut GPT-5 in early August, featuring both mini and nano iterations available through its API. Recently, several OpenAI team members hinted at an exciting week ahead, with CEO Sam Altman teasing the launch over the weekend.
OpenAI is expected to make an official announcement regarding GPT-5 later today, coinciding with a scheduled “LIVE5TREAM” at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. This unveiling aligns with the recent release of two open-weight GPT models by the company, one of which can operate on a local PC.
