Google has announced an upgrade to its Gemini AI chatbot, introducing a feature that will enable the bot to retain specific information about users’ interests and preferences. This update, revealed on Tuesday, allows users to instruct Gemini to remember details about themselves, enhancing the personalization of responses in future interactions. Currently, this memory feature is exclusive to paid subscribers and can be accessed through both the web and mobile app.
Gemini Can Now Remember Users’ Interests and Preferences
The ability to remember user-specific information has emerged as one of the most sought-after functionalities in AI models. It allows the chatbot to retain relevant details from previous sessions, eliminating the need for users to repeatedly input the same information. Users may choose to save details such as their name, birthday, preferred style of communication, and occupation. This limitation has previously hindered the potential for chatbots to serve as effective companions or assistants, as each new conversation began without any prior context.
Recognizing this gap, AI companies have begun to integrate memory functions into their offerings. Earlier this year, OpenAI implemented a similar feature in ChatGPT, while other industry leaders like Anthropic and Microsoft have also adopted memory capabilities in their chatbots.
Until now, Google’s AI chatbot lacked the capacity to recall context from prior discussions, even when users explicitly requested that certain information be retained. However, the recent update marks a significant shift in this regard, enabling users to leverage the new memory functionality.
In an update on its updates page, Google introduced the feature known as Saved Info. Through this capability, users can ask Gemini to remember their interests and preferences, either by using phrases like “Remember” or “Do not forget” in conversation, or by manually editing their details via the Saved Info page.
Once information has been logged by Gemini, it will be utilized in all subsequent conversations. Users can also personalize and adjust the responses generated by the AI. Google has stated that users will have the ability to view, edit, or delete any information saved within Gemini, and the chatbot will display this information whenever it references the Saved Info.
It remains unclear whether Google can access the data stored through the Saved Info feature or if the AI will be trained on this information. Additionally, the implications of deleting information from Saved Info on Google’s servers have not been disclosed. Presently, the feature is available in English and is part of the Gemini Advanced subscription, which can be obtained through the Google One AI Premium Plan.
