The integration of Google Photos with the Gemini app on Android is now being rolled out to users. Earlier this month, Google confirmed that this feature was being made available to the public. With this update, users have the ability to ask Gemini questions regarding their photos, which can assist in locating specific images or extracting information from the photos stored in Google Photos. This functionality, referred to as Ask Photos, was initially announced at Google I/O 2024, and a version of the feature has already been incorporated into the Photos app itself.

Gemini Will Now Answer Questions About Google Photos

A recent report from 9to5Google indicates that the Gemini integration with Google Photos is currently being rolled out to Android users. However, some staff members at Gadgets 360 have yet to observe this feature, which is to be expected due to Google’s phased rollout approach. It may take several weeks for the update to reach all compatible devices.

To access the feature, users should open the Gemini app, click on the profile icon located in the top right corner, and navigate to the Apps menu. This section, formerly known as Extensions, will now display Google Photos as an available option. Activating the toggle next to the app will establish a connection between the AI chatbot and the photo application.

There are two primary functions for using this feature. First, users can search for specific images in their library. By entering natural language queries, such as “Show my photos from last summer” or “Show me recent selfies,” the AI will sift through the app to present relevant images.

In addition to locating images, Gemini can also extract specific details from within the photos. Users can ask questions like, “What was the theme of my birthday party in 2019?” or “What color was my t-shirt last Sunday?” Google asserts that Gemini employs computer vision technology to analyze images and provide the requested information.

Once Gemini identifies an image or album from Google Photos, users can tap on it to open the file directly in the Photos app. There’s also the option to drag and drop a photo from Gemini’s on-screen overlay into another application. However, it’s important to note that this functionality is limited to a single image at a time.

Currently, Gemini does not support editing photos, creating collages, adding labels, or managing albums.
