The resulting shock front has been compared by scientists to the sonic boom produced by a jet fighter. These significant findings have been detailed in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Stephan’s Quintet and the Collision’s Impact

Stephan’s Quintet, named in honor of 19th-century French astronomer Édouard Stephan, comprises five galaxies that are engaged in a series of gravitational interactions. The recent event involved NGC 7318b crashing into this group, resulting in a turbulent field of debris, according to a report by Science Live report.

Dr. Marina Arnaudova, an astrophysicist at the University of Hertfordshire, described the resulting area as “a massive intergalactic field of plasma and gas debris re-energised by the collision.” She noted that this activity has illuminated the plasma at radio frequencies and may have initiated new star formation within the region.

Observations and Research Techniques

This event marks the initial deployment of the WEAVE spectrograph, which is mounted on the William Herschel Telescope located in La Palma, Spain. By analyzing the light emitted from the system, researchers have been able to trace debris patterns, ionized gas trails, and emerging stars that have been influenced by the shockwave.
