Epic Games has announced the permanent return of the original Fortnite, allowing players to revisit the iconic map and loot from the game’s inaugural season. This nostalgic experience will be available starting December 9, the developer revealed on Tuesday. Since its launch in early access in 2017, Fortnite has grown into a cultural phenomenon, offering both co-op and Battle Royale modes, which contributed to its rapid ascent in popularity. Currently, Fortnite is in a Chapter 2 Remix season, featuring locations and loot inspired by its second chapter.

Reintroduction of Fortnite OG

Known as “Fortnite OG,” this nostalgic season was officially confirmed by Epic Games in a post shared on X on Tuesday. “OG is coming BACK and is here to stay. Relive Battle Royale from the start and explore the OG map, collect OG loot, and relive OG seasons. Drop back in on December 6,” the company stated. Alongside the announcement, an image of the original Fortnite map was shared.

This isn’t the first occasion that Epic Games has revived the original season of Fortnite. In November 2023, the studio held a month-long Fortnite OG season that garnered an enthusiastic response from players. Following that launch, Fortnite saw its highest engagement day ever, with over 44.7 million players logging in and contributing to a total of more than 102 million hours of gameplay during the OG season.

Over the years, Fortnite has undergone significant seasonal updates, dramatically transforming from its original format. The game now includes six different modes, including unique experiences like Lego Fortnite and Rocket Racing, alongside the widely popular Battle Royale mode.

Fortnite is also renowned for its large-scale season-ending events and in-game concerts featuring some of the biggest names in music. Currently in its fifth chapter, Fortnite is set to launch Chapter 6 next month.

On November 2, Epic Games announced Chapter 2, the Remix, which reintroduces reimagined content from the game’s second chapter with weekly location and loot updates. This chapter also features collaborations with prominent rappers such as Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Ice Spice, and Juice WRLD. Fortnite remains free-to-play across various platforms, including PC, Mac, mobile, Xbox, and PlayStation.
