Final Fantasy XVI, which debuted exclusively on the PlayStation 5 in 2023, has recently made its way to PC, launching last month. However, the action-RPG has yet to become available on Xbox, and there are currently no specific plans for its release on Microsoft’s console. Publisher Square Enix has now provided insights regarding the prospects of Final Fantasy XVI being released on Xbox Series S/X.

Final Fantasy XVI on Xbox

Naoki Yoshida, the renowned producer of Final Fantasy XVI, confirmed that Square Enix intends to develop an Xbox port for the title but cannot announce a timeline for its release just yet.

“We did announce the PC version of the game, and we do want to bring it to Xbox,” Yoshida expressed in a Video Games interview released last week. However, he added, “When it comes to specifics such as the release date, we are not in a position to share anything at this moment.”

Yoshida encouraged Xbox users to maintain their optimism about the game’s potential release, emphasizing that Square Enix is committed to making it happen. “It’s not as if there’s no hope,” he stated. “We very much want to achieve that. So players should not give up hope.”

Neither Square Enix nor Microsoft has confirmed the development of an Xbox port of Final Fantasy XVI at this time.

The game originally launched on the PS5 on June 22, 2023, and was subsequently released for PC on September 17 via Steam and the Epic Games Store. A Complete Edition, featuring the Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide expansions alongside the main game, has also been made available on the PS5.

Square Enix’s strategy of launching Final Fantasy titles exclusively on the PS5 has had mixed outcomes, reportedly impacting sales negatively. Earlier this year, the company revealed in an earnings report that the sales performance of recent high-profile games fell below expectations. According to CEO Takashi Kiryu, titles such as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Final Fantasy XVI, and Foamstars— all PlayStation exclusives—did not meet anticipated revenue and profit levels.

In light of these developments, Square Enix has been restructuring its approach, indicating a shift away from exclusive releases on PlayStation. Kiryu noted that future major titles will be launched on multiple platforms, including PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PC.
