Facebook is set to enhance the video playback experience on its mobile applications by unifying the format across various types of video content. Previously, users encountered separate full-screen modes for Reels, lengthy videos, and live streams, which led to a fragmented viewing experience. Currently, Reels are displayed in a vertical full-screen mode, while longer videos and live content open in a half-screen layout featuring comments at the bottom. This upgrade aims to eliminate these inconsistencies.

The company disclosed this upgrade on Wednesday in a post from its Meta newsroom. The announcement emphasized the introduction of a revamped video player that will unify Reels, extended videos, and live broadcasts into a single full-screen format. The new video player is initially being rolled out on iOS and Android platforms in the U.S. and Canada, with a global roll-out planned for the coming months.

This enhancement means all video content will become accessible in a consistent vertical full-screen layout. The design draws inspiration from Instagram’s Reels, allowing users to like, comment, share, and send videos via Messenger from an interface located on the right side. The video’s uploader’s name will appear at the bottom, accompanied by a brief description.

Longer videos not formatted for vertical viewing can still be enjoyed in landscape mode. Facebook plans to introduce an icon that allows users to switch the orientation of horizontal videos to full screen. In addition to this feature, improved video navigation controls will be provided.

Users will be able to pause videos and skip ahead or back by ten seconds using centrally positioned icons. A slider at the bottom will offer more precise control over navigating to specific segments of the video. The update also includes a revamped recommendations system, tailored to align with user preferences. According to the post, users might receive suggestions for Reels featuring quick makeup routines or comprehensive DIY tutorials from seasoned homeowners.
