Elon Musk announced that long-format videos will soon be accessible on smart televisions, following a report from Fortune magazine stating that the social media platform X plans to introduce a TV app aimed at users of Amazon and Samsung devices next week.
In October of the previous year, the platform began testing a preliminary version of video and audio calls for select users. Musk has expressed ambitions to evolve X into a super app encompassing a range of services, from messaging to peer-to-peer transactions.
“Coming soon,” Musk replied briefly on X in response to a user who suggested that the platform’s long-form videos would be viewable directly on smart TVs.
According to Fortune, the upcoming app may resemble the television application currently offered by YouTube, with an unnamed source indicating Musk’s intention to compete directly with the video giant.
A request for additional information from X was not answered by the company at the time of this report.
In its efforts to transform into a “video-first platform,” X has established partnerships with notable figures such as former Fox host Tucker Carlson and ex-CNN anchor Don Lemon.
Since Musk’s acquisition of X in 2022, the platform has faced challenges in attracting advertisers amid ongoing controversies. Last month, X announced plans to allow advertisers to display video ads alongside content from specific creators.
