The highly anticipated expansion for the acclaimed action RPG Elden Ring, titled Shadow of the Erdtree, unveiled a new trailer on Tuesday, providing insights into the game’s narrative and lore. This story trailer explored the backstory of Miquella, the brother of Malenia, while also introducing the primary antagonist, Messmer the Impaler. The expansion is set to be released on June 21 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
Clocking in at three minutes, the cinematic trailer presents the history of the Realm of Shadow, the new setting for the expansion. The narrative touches upon a betrayal that gave rise to both Gold and Shadow. Additionally, it describes a harrowing war in the Land of Shadow, depicted as a “purge without grace or honor.” Once again, Messmer appears, wielding his destructive flames that have left devastation across the land.
Although the trailer is filled with intrigue, it offers limited details, setting the stage for an exciting journey through the land of Shadow, promising a completely new world for players to explore within Elden Ring. Shadow of the Erdtree is reported to be FromSoftware’s largest expansion to date, featuring an expansive map filled with numerous activities. In a previous interview, Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki suggested the scale of the expansion, comparing it to or even surpassing the size of Limgrave from the base game.
The announcement for Elden Ring’s first major expansion occurred in February 2023, with an initial teaser image that piqued fan interest. The first gameplay trailer was released in February 2024, revealing new features, story elements, and an overview of the world of the expansion, along with confirming the release date.
Shadow of the Erdtree is now available for pre-order on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox storefronts, with its official launch scheduled for June 21. Players are reminded that ownership of the base game is necessary to access the expansion.
