Dying Light, the popular survival horror game launched by Techland in 2015, is set to receive an update that promises significant graphics and audio enhancements. Titled Dying Light: Retouched Update, this upgrade will be available on June 26 for both PC and console platforms. Initially announced in January, the update includes enhancements to textures, lighting, draw distances, and shadow quality, along with a remastered soundtrack.

Dying Light: Retouched Update Set for Release This Week

The announcement regarding the release date and specifics of the improvements was made via a blog post shared on Tuesday by the studio. Tymon Smektała, the franchise director of Dying Light, emphasized that this update is not a full remaster of the game but rather a set of targeted enhancements to its visuals.

“Several players anticipated a complete remaster,” Smektała noted. “To clarify, the Retouched Update focuses on extracting even more quality from the Dying Light you already cherish, rather than providing a total makeover.”

The update will offer improved and upscaled texture quality, enhancing the appearance of various in-game assets. Additionally, players can expect upgraded lighting systems and physics-based rendering that will enhance the reflections on metallic surfaces within the game.

“In recent years, we’ve made substantial additions and customizations and learned how to maximize the technology at our disposal. Eventually, someone decided to apply those insights to older assets, and that revelation led us to expand this approach across the entire game,” explained Grzegorz Świstowski, the franchise’s technical game director, detailing the update’s concept.

Techland has also increased the maximum level of detail (LOD) range from 260 percent to 340 percent in the game’s view distance settings. This enhancement will enable players on modern hardware to see more detailed assets at greater distances.

Moreover, floors, walls, and various other surfaces in Dying Light will benefit from a new 8K ultra shadow quality, accompanied by improved lighting that enhances their detail and depth.

Despite these visual improvements, Techland confirmed that the update will not alter the game’s existing system requirements.

In addition, composer Paweł Blaszczak has remastered the game’s soundtrack, introducing new tracks and ambient sounds. Combat audio feedback has also been upgraded for a more robust and impactful experience.

Dying Light: Retouched Update will be provided as a free download for all owners of the game on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X on June 26.

Looking ahead, Techland is preparing for the release of its next title, Dying Light: The Beast, which is scheduled to launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X on August 22. A version for previous-generation consoles is expected to be released later this year.
