BioWare appears to be moving past the underwhelming launches of Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem, having released what looks to be a successful title with Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The action role-playing game soared to the top of Steam’s Top Sellers list shortly after its launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X on Thursday, overtaking the recently launched Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which has settled into second place. This new installment of Dragon Age has reportedly become BioWare’s most successful launch on Steam to date, according to concurrent player statistics from SteamDB.
Record-Breaking Launch for Dragon Age: The Veilguard
In just 24 hours after its debut, Dragon Age: The Veilguard achieved a peak concurrent player count of 70,414 on Steam, making it BioWare’s most popular release ever on the platform, as reported by VGC. This surpasses the previous record held by Mass Effect Legendary Edition, which peaked at 59,817 players in 2021.
The new title also marks one of EA’s most significant single-player launches on Steam, eclipsing the numbers for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which recorded a peak of 67,855 players last year.
It is important to note that these player counts only reflect activity on Steam for PC and do not account for sales data from platforms such as the Epic Games Store, EA Play, or consoles like PS5 and Xbox Series S/X.
EA’s Projections for the Title
Although precise sales figures have not been disclosed, the game’s launch trajectory aligns with EA’s optimistic expectations. During the company’s FY 2025 second-quarter earnings call on Tuesday, CEO Andrew Wilson expressed confidence in maintaining high expectations for Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Wilson commented, “Early critic scores are strong and reflect the high-quality depth and detail in this action-packed adventure. We anticipate Dragon Age will be an exemplary model of how our blockbuster storytelling can engage and connect fans in uniquely compelling ways. Looking ahead, I’m enthusiastic about our direction over the coming 12 to 18 months.”
With the RPG’s release, EA is forecasting better year-on-year financial performance for the third quarter. “As we look to Q3, we anticipate net bookings between $2.4 billion and $2.55 billion, which represents an increase of 1 percent to 8 percent compared to last year, primarily fueled by the launch of Dragon Age and the ongoing growth of our EA Sports FC franchise,” Wilson stated during the earnings call.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard was launched on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X on October 31.
