ChatGPT has introduced a new feature allowing users to link their GitHub repositories with the chatbot. This enhancement, revealed last week, is part of the Deep Research agent. OpenAI stated that the feature enables the AI to generate comprehensive reports based on both user repositories and third-party data. Currently, this capability is being made available exclusively to paid subscribers of the platform. It is important to note that there may be a delay of up to five minutes for newly created or edited repositories to appear in the Deep Research GitHub connector.

GitHub Connector Now Integrated in ChatGPT’s Deep Research

In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), the OpenAI Developers team announced the deployment of this new feature. The Deep Research capability that incorporates GitHub is available worldwide for Team users, while Plus and Pro subscribers can also access it, except those located in the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK.

The account also released a video demonstration of the feature. According to the video, eligible users can initiate a query to Deep Research, after which they will see a new GitHub connection button. This feature provides the chatbot with access to the user’s repository, along with any other publicly available repositories.

OpenAI emphasized, “Ask a question and the deep research agent will read and search the repo’s source code and PRs, returning a detailed report with citations.”

On its support pages, OpenAI indicated that the feature is currently in beta, adhering to GitHub’s terms and conditions. Once connected, Deep Research allows ChatGPT to retrieve live data from repositories, including source code, Readme files, and various documents, enabling the chatbot to analyze the information and provide meaningful insights.

Additionally, OpenAI noted that if ChatGPT Plus and Pro users have opted into the “Improve the model for everyone” setting, the GitHub data will be used for training its models. Conversely, if this setting is disabled, the data will not be retained. The company also clarified that it does not store data from its business offerings, including Team, Enterprise, Edu, and API services.
