ChatGPT is set to introduce a new feature that will allow users to link their GitHub repositories with the AI chatbot. This development, unveiled last week, is part of the Deep Research agent initiative. OpenAI has indicated that this functionality will enable the AI to generate detailed reports based on the user’s repositories, as well as those of others. Currently, the San Francisco-based AI company is making this feature available exclusively to paid subscribers. It is worth noting that it may take up to five minutes for a newly created or modified repository to appear in the Deep Research GitHub connector.
GitHub Connector Integrated into Deep Research for ChatGPT
In a recent post on X (previously Twitter), OpenAI Developers announced the launch of this feature. The Deep Research functionality with GitHub is accessible globally to Team users, while Plus and Pro subscribers will also benefit from it, although users in the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK are excluded.

The official account also provided a video demonstration of the feature. In the demo, eligible users are guided to initially pose a query to Deep Research. After doing so, a new GitHub connection button will appear, which when clicked will grant the chatbot access to both the user’s repositories and any other publicly available third-party repositories.
OpenAI called attention to the innovative ability of the Deep Research agent, stating, “Ask a question and the deep research agent will read and search the repo’s source code and PRs, returning a detailed report with citations.”
On its support pages, OpenAI noted that this feature is currently in its beta phase, and users are subject to GitHub’s terms and conditions. When Deep Research connects to GitHub, ChatGPT can access real-time data from repositories, including code, Readme files, and various documents, enabling it to analyze and provide insights on the content.
OpenAI also emphasized that for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users who have their “Improve the model for everyone” setting enabled, the data from GitHub may be utilized to enhance its models. Conversely, if the setting is deactivated, the data will not be retained. Moreover, the company clarified that it does not store data from its business services, which encompass Team, Enterprise, Edu, and its API offerings.
