OpenAI has made its latest image generation tool available to all users, following an earlier delay for free accounts due to overwhelming demand. The tool has gained significant attention for its capacity to produce strikingly accurate renditions of Studio Ghibli-style art.
In a post on X, CEO Sam Altman confirmed that the image generation feature is now accessible to free users, although it comes with certain restrictions. While specific details on usage limits have not been disclosed, Altman previously indicated that users in the free tier would have access to three image generations per day, a limitation that remains in place.
This updated image generation tool operates on the company’s GPT-4o model and was initially introduced on March 25. Although it was designed to be available across different subscription tiers—ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, and Free—the broader rollout was postponed just one day after its launch. Altman humorously noted that the demand caused “our GPUs to melt” at one stage when ChatGPT attracted a million new users in just one hour.
In another development, OpenAI announced a successful funding round that raised $40 billion, marking the largest funding round for a private technology company to date. This funding elevates the company’s valuation to approximately $300 billion.
