Earlier this year, publisher 2K announced that the next installment in the Borderlands series is currently under active development. Recently, Randy Pitchford, the head of Gearbox, the studio responsible for the franchise, provided a hint about the upcoming title, suggesting that an official announcement is imminent. Although he did not specifically mention Borderlands 4, Pitchford assured fans that they would be “very, very happy” with what is coming next from the studio. These remarks coincide with the upcoming release of the Borderlands film adaptation, which is set to hit theaters on August 9.
Anticipation Builds for Gearbox’s Upcoming Title
In a conversation with GamesRadar+, Pitchford offered a glimpse into the next direction for the Borderlands franchise. He expressed confidence that fans would be thrilled with the new project at its official reveal, stating that the wait for news would not be prolonged. “I’m confident that our fans are going to be very, very happy with the next video game project when we are ready to announce it,” he said. “And I will tell you that we’re not going to be making people wait for a long time before we announce it.”
According to Pitchford, Gearbox is engaged in several significant projects, with multiple developments underway at the studio. Past reports have suggested that a sequel to Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands may be in the pipeline alongside Borderlands 4, with a Gearbox employee’s LinkedIn profile hinting at both titles being in progress.
The last core title in the Borderlands series was Borderlands 3, released in 2019. The franchise also saw a spin-off, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, debuting in 2022. The eagerly awaited film adaptation features actors such as Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black, and is set for release on August 9.
Additionally, during his interview with GamesRadar+, Pitchford suggested the possibility of a sequel to the Borderlands film, indicating that an announcement regarding this could come “before the end of the year” or even “maybe sooner.”
In related news, earlier this year, Take-Two Interactive completed the acquisition of Gearbox from Embracer Group for $460 million. In a press release regarding the acquisition, Take-Two confirmed that both Gearbox and 2K are actively working on the next chapter of the Borderlands series. The statement noted that Gearbox is currently developing six key interactive entertainment projects at various stages, including five sequels related to the Borderlands and Homeworld franchises, along with at least one new intellectual property.
