2K and Gearbox Software have officially unveiled Borderlands 4, the latest installment in their acclaimed looter-shooter series. Scheduled for release in 2025 for PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X, this new title is part of Take-Two Interactive’s Fiscal Year 2026 plans. Borderlands 4 marks the fourth entry in the main series and the seventh game overall, following 2019’s Borderlands 3. Specific details about the game remain under wraps, although it has been confirmed that players will once again take on the role of a vault hunter on a quest for hidden treasure.
Announcement of Borderlands 4
The announcement was made on Tuesday during the Opening Night Live event at Gamescom, where a teaser trailer was revealed. While the trailer offers little in terms of specifics, it establishes an action-packed atmosphere and hints at an entirely new planetary setting. “Players will once again assume the role of a legendary Vault Hunter as they search for secret alien treasure while blasting everything in sight,” 2K stated in a press release.
Randy Pitchford, founder and president of Gearbox, expressed the team’s aspirations for Borderlands 4: “All of us at Gearbox have massive ambitions for Borderlands 4 and are putting everything we have into making everything we love about Borderlands better than ever before while taking the game to new levels in exciting new directions.”
Catharina Lavers Mallet, senior vice president and general manager at 2K Core Games, emphasized the franchise’s popularity, saying, “The Borderlands series is one of 2K’s most successful franchises ever and is beloved by millions globally. We’re excited that our already close partnership and collaboration with the Gearbox team has grown even deeper, and we look forward to delivering best-in-class experiences for both longtime fans and new players alike.”
In addition to Borderlands 4, 2K unveiled two other titles during the Gamescom event: Mafia: The Old Country and Sid Meier’s Civilization VII, both anticipated for release next year. Additionally, Take-Two Interactive is preparing for the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 in 2025, which promises to make Fiscal Year 2026 a pivotal time for the company with several major titles slated for release. “We’re thrilled to be able to share with our fans that 2025 will mark a massive year for 2K and Gearbox Entertainment,” said Mallet.
Borderlands 4 is set to launch in 2025 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X, and players can add the title to their wishlists across all digital storefronts.
