The Game Awards 2024 will be held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on December 12. This live event will be broadcast on YouTube and Twitch, celebrating the top games of the year across various genres. It is also anticipated to debut reveals and trailers for a number of upcoming and unreleased titles. 2K has announced that fans can expect exclusive first-look trailers for two of its significant games: Borderlands 4 and Mafia: The Old Country.
2K Prepares for The Game Awards
The official Borderlands account shared a post on X on Monday, revealing that the trailer for Borderlands 4 will debut at The Game Awards 2024. They described it as the “most ambitious Borderlands yet.”
Simultaneously, the Mafia X handle confirmed that Mafia: The Old Country will also be showcased during the event.
Both titles were initially announced at Gamescom in August, where teasers indicated a release window in 2025. Gearbox Software’s upcoming looter shooter, Borderlands 4, is set to launch on PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store), PS5, and Xbox Series S/X, coinciding with Take-Two Interactive’s Fiscal Year 2026.
Borderlands 4
This new installment, the fourth in the mainline series and the seventh overall, follows the release of 2019’s Borderlands 3. While 2K has yet to provide detailed information, it has confirmed players will once again assume the role of a vault hunter on a quest for hidden treasure.
Randy Pitchford, founder and president of Gearbox, expressed the team’s high aspirations for Borderlands 4, stating, “All of us at Gearbox have massive ambitions for Borderlands 4 and are putting everything we have into making everything we love about Borderlands better than ever before while taking the game to new levels in exciting new directions.”
Mafia: The Old Country
On the same day, 2K also presented Mafia: The Old Country, the fourth main entry in the Mafia series, for platforms including PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. The publisher, alongside developer Hangar 13, has confirmed that the action-adventure game will transport players back to early 1900s Sicily, exploring the origins of organized crime through an original storyline.
Nick Baynes, president of Hangar 13, commented on the project, highlighting the intention to return to the franchise’s roots: “In Mafia: The Old Country, we’re going back to the roots of what fans love about the franchise, crafting a deep, linear narrative with that classic mob movie feeling, visiting a stunning new setting, and delivering it all in a tight, focused package perfect for fans of immersive experiences.”
Though brief teaser trailers for both Borderlands 4 and Mafia: The Old Country were presented at Gamescom, The Game Awards will likely feature longer trailers that delve into their stories and gameplay mechanics. Additionally, there could be announcements regarding the release dates for both titles. Gearbox’s Pitchford has confirmed that the trailer for Mafia 4 will include gameplay footage.
Take-Two, the parent company of 2K, is gearing up for a busy Fiscal Year 2026, with several major titles set to launch. In addition to Borderlands 4 and Mafia: The Old Country, the company is also planning to release Sid Meier’s Civilization VII in 2025. Furthermore, Grand Theft Auto 6, a much-anticipated open-world game from Rockstar Games and the successor to GTA 5, is projected for a Fall 2025 release.
The Game Awards 2024 will be hosted by creator and producer Geoff Keighley. The nominees for this year’s awards were announced last month, with the PS5 exclusive Astro Bot and Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth leading the nominations with seven each, including nods for Game of the Year. Other contenders for the Game of the Year title include action RPG Black Myth: Wukong, indie roguelike deckbuilder Balatro, the breakout RPG Metaphor: ReFantazio, and the Elden Ring expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree.
