Bluesky has clarified that it does not utilize user data to train its generative artificial intelligence (AI) models. The social media platform outlined its use of AI tools while asserting that both public and private user posts do not contribute to the training of its models. This announcement comes in response to various creators and users who expressed concerns regarding the platform’s privacy policies related to AI.
Bluesky Asserts It Doesn’t Train AI on User Posts
In a recent update on the platform, Bluesky emphasized its policy on AI and user content, stating, “We do not use any of your content to train generative AI, and have no intention of doing so.” This announcement was made following feedback from artists and creators who sought clarity on the platform’s AI practices.
Additionally, Bluesky detailed how it employs generative AI tools within its operations. The company utilizes AI technology internally for content moderation, a standard practice among social media platforms. Furthermore, AI plays a role in the Discover algorithmic feed, which recommends posts to users based on their interactions with the platform.
According to a report from Technology News, although Bluesky does not leverage user data for AI training, third-party organizations can still access the platform and collect data for their own models. Emily Liu, a spokesperson for the company, noted that Bluesky’s robots.txt files do not prohibit outside entities from crawling its site for information.
Despite this, Liu mentioned that the topic is currently under review within Bluesky, as the team seeks to establish measures to ensure that external organizations adhere to user consent guidelines on the platform.
On another note, Bluesky announced on Sunday that it welcomed one million new users in just one day, bringing its total registered user count to over 17 million.
