Apple is preparing to unveil its annual operating system updates at the upcoming WWDC 2025 event next week. Anticipated changes are on the horizon for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, particularly in terms of their user interface and naming conventions. Nonetheless, the company is also showing commitment to visionOS, the software that drives the Apple Vision Pro headset. Recent reports suggest that the mixed reality device could see enhancements in its compatibility with various peripheral game controllers, including those from PlayStation and Xbox, as well as spatial controllers.
visionOS 26 Features for Apple Vision Pro
According to a report from 9to5Mac, visionOS 26 is set to broaden controller support for the Apple Vision Pro beyond its current offerings. The augmented reality headset will reportedly gain native compatibility with PlayStation and Xbox game controllers. Although it has had some support for these peripherals, adoption among developers has been limited.
The report details the inclusion of a “controller required” badge in the Vision Pro’s App Store, denoting games that necessitate a designated controller for gameplay. With the rollout of visionOS 26, users will also receive notifications when they acquire games that require the use of a PlayStation, Xbox, or any controller compliant with the Made for iPhone (MFi) program.
Additionally, Apple is said to be integrating support for a new category of input devices—spatial controllers. These gadgets are typically leveraged for seamless interactions in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), offering precise tracking of movement in three-dimensional space. Users will be notified if a game requires spatial controllers equipped with motion awareness features.
This development potentially highlights Apple’s growing focus on gaming. Last year, the company introduced support for wired Xbox controllers across its iPhone, iPad, and Mac platforms. Speculation is rife that this year’s WWDC may also bring forth new initiatives, including the launch of a dedicated Game app. This app could serve as a centralized platform for Apple users to access games and monitor their activity and achievements in-game.
Furthermore, Apple is reportedly in discussions with PlayStation regarding the integration of PlayStation VR2 controllers with the Apple Vision Pro, exploring the possibility of third-party developers providing support for these accessories.
