Apple unveiled an exciting gaming-oriented feature for the iPhone during its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2024, held at Apple Park. The tech company announced that the upcoming iOS 18 will introduce Game Mode, a feature that was previously exclusive to Mac devices.
Game Mode on iPhone
According to the company, Game Mode on iOS 18 aims to enhance the gaming experience by ensuring consistent frame rates. This improvement is particularly beneficial for extended gaming sessions. The mode prioritizes performance by reducing background activity, allowing the CPU and GPU to maintain “high frame rates for hours of continuous gameplay,” as claimed by Apple.
Previously, Game Mode debuted on Mac at WWDC 2023 and is now being adapted for the iPhone. Apple noted that this feature also minimizes audio latency when using AirPods, while Bluetooth controllers from PlayStation and Xbox experience reduced input latency, resulting in quicker response times. According to Apple, “This means consistent performance without lag or slowdowns, no matter how long you play.”
While Game Mode on Mac supports both existing and new games, it remains unclear if the same functionality will be available on the iPhone. Automatic activation of the feature occurs when a game launches, eliminating the need for manual toggling.
Apple also highlighted the introduction of Personalised Spatial Audio within Game Mode for iOS 18, designed to enhance the audio experience. This feature was showcased during a demonstration of Need for Speed Mobile and is compatible exclusively with AirPods Pro (2nd generation).
AAA Games on iPhone
In addition to gaming features, Apple announced a lineup of AAA titles coming soon to the iPhone. Resident Evil 7 Biohazard is set to be the first title available for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, launching on July 2. Additionally, a version of Resident Evil 2 is currently in development for Apple devices.
While details on iPhone availability remain limited, Apple also mentioned upcoming releases such as Sniper Elite 4, Dead Island 2, Control: Ultimate Edition, Frostpunk 2, Valheim, and Palword, which are all set to launch on Mac. Furthermore, the company is collaborating with Ubisoft to bring the action RPG Assassin’s Creed: Shadows to the iPad.
